I have recently reconciled with a past girlfriend ( the one I mentioned in my Loveawake dating site blog a few weeks back–not the psycho, of course.) and I have never been so happy before in my life.  After reading my free dating blog, she took me back and because of that, I have never worked so hard to be romantic in my life.

I never thought I had a problem in that department until my friends and siblings would constantly post on their Facebook their “lovey-dovey” pictures from their romantic getaway vacations.  The most romantic thing I have ever done was cook my girlfriend’s grandmother’s family pot roast recipe down to a T for her one night.  When I mentioned that to my friends, they all laughed me and told me to get a real job so I could take my girlfriend on a romantic getaway.

Terrified of the thought of losing her again, I looked on a personals site for the best weekend getaway package and booked the Ultimate Couples Package at the Sheraton hotel at Niagara Falls, Ontario on my much used credit card.

When I told her the news that I was taking her away, she seemed thrilled because she had never been on a romantic getaway either.  We went to Niagara and couldn’t wait to see our ultimate “couples” package.  We went to our expensive hotel room and discovered that our “oversized” jacuzzi could barely fit a “Snooki” and we could barely see the Falls from our “FALLSVIEW” hotel suite.  I could hear my VISA card crying for a rape shower.

Trying not to let this disappointing news get the best of me, I took her out on the town. We saw couples walking hand in hand staring into each other’s eyes. They looked so happy and content doing nothing and staring at the Falls like zombies, so my girlfriend and I felt forced to do the same. It turns out ‘forced romance’ is not fun at all.  It’s boring as f*ck to be perfectly blunt.

So many couples feel forced to go to expensive tourist attractions, resorts and vacation spots simply to prove to the world that they are on a romantic getaway–when really they are being suckered into conformity.

After we came to that realization, my girlfriend and I decided to follow our own guidelines to true romance.  We visited the wax museums, had two dollar beers, play dino mini putt, drank whiskey while smoking a 20 dollar Cuba Cigar and then went to the Casino to play digital black jack at the bar.  It may sound lame to you, but it was the most romantic thing we both have ever done.

The point of this lengthy story is that you don’t need rose petals, sparkling wine and evening wear to have a romantic evening. Nothing is more romantic than being able to enjoy your partner’s company. It doesn’t matter what you do, just as long as you’re having fun.

Tonight my girlfriend and I plan on watching the sunset from my apartment balcony and I plan on surprising her with….(wait for it) a cookies and mint Hershey chocolate bar.  It was her favorite chocolate bar that was discontinued back when she was a teenager.  Trust me, this will garner the same reaction as a diamond ring would. (Here’s hoping she doesn’t read this until afterwards!)
