Picture the ideal man. Chances are, this hunk has a killer sense of humor. You would describe him as a consummate conversationalist, an avid reader, a talented artist, maybe even a fan of the opera. Both well-educated and self-taught, he is undeniably brilliant. He’s a doctor, so your mother doesn’t need to meet him to love him. He’s adventurous, confident, fearless yet empathetic. Although he is a mystery to you, he’s so attentive: he listens and he knows you better than you know yourself. He lives by his own moral code. In his own way, he protects the underdog and anyone he respects, and he despises the rude and has no qualms about showing them how he feels. He loves to cook for you. He writes you letters, perfuming them with a scent he had crafted just for you in Italy. He understands self-sacrifice: he’d sooner cut off his own hand than harm you, and he’d kill for you. In sum, he is a perfect gentleman.

Now imagine that this gentleman exists. He’s our diamond in the rough, and we have learned quite a bit about him since we first met him. We don’t begrudge him his past as a mad psychiatrist confined to a cell in a hospital for the criminally insane, his muzzle, or his comb-over; even then he was considered so brilliant that the FBI consulted with him on their toughest cases. We couldn’t help but wonder: who is he really and how can we get to know him better? We know he’s a genius and a bit of a bad boy, but is he boyfriend material?

Thanks to a proper introduction from Bryan Fuller’s new show Hannibal, we are coming to know the legendary Doctor Lecter intimately. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen portrays the cannibal of our dreams on the NBC series, with his high cheekbones, European accent, perfect hair, impeccable style, and a refined cool. For him, life is exciting and full of possibilities, and we love the enthusiasm he has for his hobbies. We yearn to join him in his office as he reads his meticulously ordered client notes or in the sanctuary of his kitchen as he prepares a delicious-looking meal, and even our brief glimpses into his theater of blood entice and impress us. We are moved by his dysfunctional relationship with FBI profiler Will Graham, and we can’t help but be impressed by his guile as he eludes the suspicion of seasoned detectives. It seems that the worst thing about him is his sense of superiority, but can we blame him when he really is better than us? We would be proud to bring him home, and friends and family alike can’t wait to attend one of his infamous dinner parties. A good man is hard to find, and we wonder how we’ve lived this long without him.

Hannibal has been renewed for a second season. We know he’s too good for us and we don’t want to scare him off, but we think he has long-term potential.
