I don’t ever recall going through that “girls are yucky/have cooties” stage. As far as I can remember, I’ve always been fond of the fairer sex. I recall being in grade one, receiving some sort of certificate (spelling maybe?), placing it on my desk, and casually leaning to the side to show it off to the cute girl that sat behind me. I wanted to impress her.

In grade four I’d somehow managed to fanangle my way into this group of grade six girls. I hung out with them at recess and lunch. They would walk me back to my classroom where the rest of my class was lined up waiting to go back in and then, in turn, give me a kiss on the cheek. I felt like the coolest dude.

My first real kiss came when I was in grade six. My best friend at the time (Dan) had a “girlfriend” (Shannon). They held hands. They kissed. I got jealous. One day when I was at Dan’s house, Shannon came over with her friend, Robin. I’d had a crush on Robin for some time. They were one year older than us.

They knocked on the door and when we answered, they asked if we wanted to play Truth or Dare. At this point it was fairly obvious what was going on. I said yes immediately. We all walked over to the abandoned barn (the barn which we would later rip apart for the timber to build our skateboard ramps), climbed the steps to the loft, and sat out the big opening at the front, our legs dangling over the edge.

It was Shannon’s turn first. Robin dared her to kiss Dan. With tongue. It was a silly dare, of course. They’d been doing that for some time now. But it was all a part of the elaborate set up. Robin’s turn.

It doesn’t take a genius to guess what Shannon dared her to do. But just in case you haven’t quite worked it out, her dare was to kiss me. With tongue. Now, this wasn’t silly at all. I’d seen it done before, but I really had no idea what I was doing. And she was an “older girl.” Who knows what kinds of experiences she had.

We held hands as we walked the length of the barn and down the steps (we wanted to get some privacy). At the foot of those steps, we put our arms around each other, my hands on her hips, her hands around my neck. Then she pulled me in.

Our tongues met, swished around for a few seconds, then our mouths parted. I was in shock. “Was that alright?” I asked her. I have no recollection of what she said, if she said anything at all. We sheepishly climbed the steps again and made our way back to Dan and Shannon. There were no more Truths or Dares made that day.
